These folks KNEW 60-days ago that they were being laid off, BEFORE the Steam Early Access, as is required under the WARN act. WARN requires 60-days advanced notice. Talk about a rug pull, everyone who bought on steam, bought a game where Steven KNEW it was over. 1000000000% a cash grab. I'm actually disgusted by the AOC devs and leadership, using a Steam release as a 'hail mary' to try and save the company, when they CLEARLY gave layoff notices before they even went early access on steam.

Actually, I am an attorney and I was also involved in attempting to get a class action against Battlefield for unlawful marketing practices. Getting the requirement to qualify for a class action may be easy, but the thing is, I bet there is no money. Not in the entities that are behind AoC or there managing entities. I bet its all....gone. Could some people get put in Jail....Or get there money back for the game? Sure. But I see that as best case scenario, as someone that has followed this games newsfeed and development for the past 10 years.

I can make a limited statement in my personal capacity and not on behalf of the company, regarding the situation. Control of the company shifted away from me, and the Board began directing actions that I could not ethically agree with or carry out. If the shareholders wanted Steven and the staff to do something that would be morally or ethically irresponsible according to their mindset (e.g., releasing an unfinished game, pay‑to‑win, etc.), I think it would be normal to stand up for their values. If you lose your entire management team (resignations), you lay everyone off and shut down the company.

Unfortunately, shareholders don’t really care about that nowadays.
And having gone through two business transactions in five years, there are some stupid shareholders out there.
We came within an inch—twice—of shutting down for similar reasons.

To explain how a company could be taken away from Steven. It takes a bit of business knowledge.

  1. You have the company intrepid studios which has its board of directors.
  2. You have the private equity group who owns intrepid studios.

Steven can be both the ceo of intrepid and an investor within the private equity group. But the private equity group still holds control over intrepid.

PE firm decides to remove Steven as CEO of intrepid, which is legal. Now Steven is just an investor with ownership stakes but not power or controlling influence of what happens.

Now I think some of this is poppycock and an easy excuse for Steven to save face.

But for those asking how an owner can lose control of his own company the above is how it can happen.

In short if true Steven was not the owner once they became backed by private equity. He was just the manager. Sold his company and idea to investors who owned the company.

Control of the company shifted away from me, and the Board began directing actions that I could not ethically agree with or carry out. I'm not gonna lie, this is actually really upsetting. I really wanted this game to be real. I feel a great loss. Nothing like this was on the horizon. I am finding it hard to believe that I won't get to play this now. Like... it was going to be such a dynamic and open world where I could be a part of something, where everyone was forced to be a part of something. The most sensible action would be to find new owners/buyers. There is 90% of the most ambitious and hopeful MMO since WoW. They need only complete development, fix a couple of things, and they have a very strong seed to grow from. To scrap it is unreasonable. Ashes has consistently been ranked as the most anticipated MMO.

Well it was nice playing with you all. Ashes of Creation has lost another active player due to the Sharif debacle. Don't take me the wrong way, you guys have something great going on here. It is just unfortunate that you can't fix Steven on Intrepid Studios. At the end of the day I am at least glad this happened before I donated the $100 I put aside to support this project.
