I think it's been more than 1 year now that ELO matchmaking was introduced.
However, the whole ranking system makes no sense at all. You could have the highest ELO in the game, but be in gold rank or even stone, just because you've been inactive.
Even after 1 year, I see people complaining that they get matched against people of a much higher rank, or that they're in master rank and got a gold teammates, and such things.

People in 2v2 randoms gotta be like: "omg, a gold teammates, and I'm up against 2 master players. I'll just go AFK, can't win with this noob. bs game."
People in premade gotta be like: "what?? master opponents when we are in plat5?? great matchmaking, bs game."
If they would see the ELO numbers, they'd know their opponents are on the same level, but with the system as it is right now, they're frustrated.

Lots of people still don't know that the matchmaking is ELO based, they'll never know, and some even don't wanna know, or don't believe it, and I can't blame them, because the only way to figure this out is to be active in the discord or chats.
One would expect that the ELO represents your rank, but as we know, we gotta grind until our rank represents our ELO.

It also always makes high ELO players look very bad when you play premade with someone, and suddenly you only lose because now you and your premade partner face hard opponents, when the partner was previously only facing bots.

With the current system we have absolutely no feedback about our opponents. Did I just lose against a really bad player, and have to improve my deck and gameplay? Or did I just lose against a very good player? Who was that guy in gold5, a top player who just hasn't played MM or this game mode for a while, or was it actually a new player? You get what I mean. Show ELO ingame, it's overdue.

Bro, one year with ELO? 😮

#

I like the idea, it will be good a command in game (exp: /Elo) and then showing the stast

Yes, elo should be visible. In general the interface needs a rework because it's ugly right now

i'd remove ranks and reimplement them as a elo ladder. from a to b is bronze, from b to c is silver and so on. then i'd add some seasonal missions to take the place of the actual rank reward system while keeping the non competitive feeling it as at the moment.

it would be better to remove the rank indicators in 2x2 than to implement the Elo to be visible. The rank system is simpler to understand than the Elo system, so it is necessary for new players to have an idea of where they are.

@latent lichen and how does removing rank indicators and not adding visible Elo exactly help with understanding new players where they are...?

my idea was always just make random 2s an unranked mode. let 1v1 and premades be the ranked modes

Unless you mean what Todd said - just turning randos into casual, but that's whole another suggestion and doesn't solve all problems of not showing Elo anyways.

Now I get why I'm always matched with people in higher ranks lol, and as an old player I feel ashamed of my self to discover this recently :v

This is exactly what I mean. It's not your fault that you didn't know. It's the games fault, a system that doesn't make any sense. Old players come back to MM, and think everything is rank based as it was before, and then they freak out because it all looks like unfair matchmaking. Also, this is a problem in all 3 ranked modes.
We can't expect that every single player comes to discord and asks how the matchmaking is working.

Here is one idea I came up with, about how it could look like ingame. Left side of your avatar shows your current rank, right side shows your "expected rank", the rank that represents your ELO number.

So in this example Player 1 is someone who already played lots of matches and is in Master5 where he belongs, according to his current skill and performance.
Player 2 is someone who hasn't played any matches in this season. He finished last season on rank Master5, but the season reset set him back to Gold rank.

Now Player 2 can see that he is in a fair matchup, because both players skill represent Master5 (expected rank), and their ELO numbers 2087 vs. 2062 are very similar.
Player 1 also knows that he's not up against a noob, but against an experienced player, so he won't get frustrated for losing against a Gold player.

The "expected rank" will always be updated, as you win and lose, and represents your ELO number.

A full re implementation of elo = rank (directly) would be nice

If it goes down equally, that's good. But if high elo players lose more elo, that might be problematic

rocky furnace
#

it's not equally but almost iirc

#

but in any case it drops by a little bit only

#

elo makes sense for a good matchmaking

#

ranks are pointless, as long as they aren't tied to elo. it's just a progress bar
