i turned off "wait for ranked match" button but it put me in ranked anyway

But it did not wait for it, that's when the bls search timer goes above the 1 min mark.
If it finds a ranked match before that, you're in it. If not, you're vs lones

This doesn't contradict the behaviour I described, if a match with real players became available, you're in it

If someone doesnt WANT to play a ranked match, or take any part in the bls leaderboard contest - then dont force them. imo thats what the OP is after. I agree

They can still play with 4 non-ai players. Its just never ranked

If you don't care about points and leaderboard, there is literally 0 difference between a ranked game and a non-ranked game with only 1 lone bs

There is no "ranked games" where everyone is doing their ranked game.
Your non-ranked can totally be someone else's ranked and vice versa

The “don’t play ranked” or “lones only” button would be great

The former doesn't make much sense with the current definition of a "ranked match"
The latter would screw mmr even harder by removing available players from the pool.
It can't be both a PvP and PvE mode with the current player base.
Unless rewards are turned off for PvE mode then I guess it would not take humans away from the PvP side. Would anyone play full lonies bls without rewards? 🤔

Me and others deciding we don't want to deal with blue star is the reason that there isn't enough players in the pool.

you know what. I'll add more context so im not just saying something just because

  • bslvl 1-2 had low level mods and sometimes had fair rounds or sometimes fought opponents with multiplicatively higher mods which couldn't be beat that easily
  • bslvl 2-3 played bluestar for fun and to practice new mods
    i enjoyed beating up smurfs (usually darts) and having somewhat fair fights or even finale jousting
  • bslvl 4, had to fight enemies with mods multiplicatively higher mods plus extra mod slots (only multiplying they're killing potential) i atleast had some darts to unfortunately beat up easily
  • bs lvl 5 (current) a ship upgrade is supposed to be a good thing and now there are no fair matches no matter the case, either everyone having lvl12 or insta-kill mods (how fun standing no chance to 3 seconds)
    and also excessive cerb ships only making it harder to kill these higher lvl players or escape them
