While we encourage members to correct each other, we understand this isn't always desirable as it can disrupt the flow of conversation and cause unnecessary frustration. This is why the server has a convention where members can add an asterisk (\✱) to the end of their name to express that they would not like to be outright corrected unless they ask. Instead, others may react to their message with an asterisk (smallcorrection for small corrections, bigcorrection for bigger corrections) as needed, after which the member can make the corrections themself or ask for a correction.

Would you like me to add an asterisk after your nickname, to show that you prefer not to be corrected outright?

De nada, Phil will still ignore it but it’s a start init
I humbly disagree with the proposition : if the goal is to be more visible (so that, that damn Phil doesn't correct Nia by error), a badge is the wrong way ... as that damn Phil is using compact mode, and as you all know, badges are not displayed in compact mode.

That damn Phil doesn’t*

#

I straight up don’t even know what compact mode is

#

Never heard of it

Screenshot ?

it's for poor people with small screen, trying to cram as much text as possible in it

#

neither profile picture, nor badge

but ~ 2× more lines on screen

Also, anyone who already has a badge (tuteur, verified) wouldn't be able to have a visible badge

Advanced users can still make typos etc. and might not appreciate being corrected on them

I see, I suggested this because I’ve just not come across a tutor or any certified user who has the smallcorrection in their name

also things that might lead ppl not getting it atm :

  1. some ppl have never read or understood the ".corrections" explanations (it's an era of TL;DR). it's also not a frequent scheme elsewhere.
  2. the asterisk is trailing after some others fancy or non latin characters in the user nickname, becoming less noticeable
  3. being human and thus fallible
#

maybe a bot could help 🤔
if the bot notices that :
• someone answered to a user with ✱ in their nickname
• the answer include a * ✱smallcorrection bigcorrection
then the bot post a small reminder to not correct directly ppl with a "✱", and put a link to the explanations ?

#

or the bot could send a reminder by DM to the offender + add " ⚠️ grenade " reactions to the unwelcomed correction

  • would be complicated since it's used in formatting
sudden dragon
#

a bit complicated but not so much, if discord is able to differentiate "*" used for formatting and isolated "*", so can your algorithm

Sometimes on pc too, but usually pc is considered the "standard"

well for a first version, you could simply react to msg with only 1 * or those containing a * surrounded by blanks (space or end of line). that would catch most of the "correction" messages
