la suite is what follows, what's coming after, in a more abstract manner, it doesn't generally refer to a specific instance of something (though it can also mean sequel, for a movie or story for instance)
suivant/suivante is an adjective meaning next. Just like other adjectives, you can use it as noun to indicate an instance with that property. (le suivant = the next one)

you would use "le suivant" in that case

yes, it's not "the next one", it's not an instance of something (except when it means sequel)
it's referring to the following events, in a more abstract way

"the next one" is basically always "le prochain" or "le suivant"
in English, you can use "one" to turn an adjective into a noun
the red one (the one that is red)
the next one (the one that is next)
the small one (the one that is small)
in French, you can just use that adjective as a noun
le rouge (the red one)
le suivant (the next one)
le petit (the small one)
