Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"Rigolo" c'est plutot funny
"Dingue" c'est plutot crazy
"Nigaud" c'est plutot fou like clown
So my personal tierlist from softest to strongest is:
Rigolo
Nigaud
Dingue
Fou
Bête
Débile
Stupide
Idiot
Con
i think t'es bête is pretty common in a joking manner
(@placid stag) it really depends on your relationship with the person too, like in English “asshole” is very strong but if it's banter it's fine. "Con" is like that. On the other hand "débile" isn't too bad but it's harder to use it in a friendly way
Débile i usually compare to dumbass
Like the tone and relationship have to be just right or it won't come off right at all lol
For me it's more like
Rigolo
Dingue
Bête
^ have never heard as an insult
Fou
Con
Débile
^ could be insulting depending on relationship/tone
Stupide
Idiot
^ not a whole lot of usage in banter, mostly just plain insults (not always worse than the previous section though)
Nigaud I've never heard anyone actually use so I dont have a good feel for it
Ah je vois! Merci bien tout le monde. 🙂↕️
I personally don’t say cuss words just because it feels weird to say it aloud.
I will avoid con and debile. Ta!
Thanks this helps. So safest option is “bête” or “bêtise » respectively.
For silly yeah I would say so! Unfortunately there's no real direct translation
j'ai l'impression que ma perception de « bête » est incorrecte, car mes livres de cours l'ont traduit par « stupid or dumb ».
It's more the lighthearted meaning of it, but I don't feel like there's a great translation
Like "it would be dumb to throw my phone in the river"
it's not "silly" exactly, but it has the same level of familiarity, i.e. "t'es bête" isn't really offensive in context
Ah je vois. So I can say this and ( tes bête/ t’es fou) in the same sense of familiarity. ✅
note that "con" gets weird with gender. "Conne" is very offensive and hardly ever friendly, however you can use "t'es con" in the masculine in an endearing way, even with women
i mean remember that la bete is the bug, it's not so serious
