Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"zut alors" and "ça alors" aren't used often in french. Often, the french people are vulgar and use : putain, ou merde.
However, some people use " ça alors" and "zut alors" without irony. But yes, these expressions can be used also ironically.
For example:
"Ça alors ! C'est incroyable, un alignement planétaire 😍"
Here, "ça alors" is used without irony.
" Ça alors, que c'est beau les crimes ! "
Here, " ça alors" is used ironically.
" Zut alors ! J'ai loupé mon train"
Here, there isn't irony.
" Zut alors ! J'ai gagné à la loterie..."
Here, it's ironic.
would this been akin to how we treat the difference between "dammit" and "darn"
or like
"god dammit" as opposed to "golly"
Ouep. Dammit et darn sont semblables à " zut alors". Mais pour " ça alors !" Ça exprime ici plutôt une émotion de surprise. Alors : oh my god or my goodness
Seraient plutôt meilleures 😉
is alors a more common thing to say irl?
so like
neither zut alors et ça alors are not commonly used irl
some people would unironically use them, but these people are rare?
Yeah kind of. The more common is : putain, merde
But it's vulgar, don't use that if you're in class or with an unknown
