Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"aimer" is the basic translation for the verb "to love", you're probably already familiar with it. It has many nuances based on how it's used
"plaire" is closer to "to appeal"
"plaire à [quelqu'un]" for instance means "to be appealing to [someone]"
depending on translation, you may have encountered something like "elle me plaît" being translated as "I love her" (literally it's closer to "she's appealing to me" or "I find her appealing")
That I understand but Aimer is iso used to mean like for inanimate objects like “J’aime ce film” but then you can also say “ce film me plais” to mean the same thing. That’s where I get confused. Are they both correct? Is one more formal then the other?
they are both correct and basically mean the same
with the nuance that plaire generally means you haven't been able to experience it fully already. You wouldn't generally say that of a person you're already with, or a movie you've already seen (but you need to know enough about it to have a formed opinion)
none is particularly formal
Okay so “J’aime ce film” is more like “I like this movie. I’ve seen it a few times.” And “ce film me plais” is more like “this movie is alright. I saw it once. I like it enough but I don’t know much about it.” So to speak?
plaire is a question of appeal
it means you haven't experienced it but want to because you're enjoying it
it's rarely used for movies because hard to find that middleground, but you can picture a series where someone is currently watching it, enjoying it and want to experience more
Okay I think that makes sense. Thank you!
in any case, those are nuances and that's the kind of thing you mostly get through experience, don't worry too much about it
"I'm enjoying x" is probably the closest I can get
J’aime bien les longues promenades dans la nature = Les longues promenades dans la nature me plaisent
