oh it looks like i cant send pictures er m hold onm
well first does anyone know if i have to do anything to send pictures here?
is this the past tense
or the present tense?
you can send pictures now (usually takes a couple messages, to avoid spam/raids)
Thank you!
Give me oneee second i think its both
so yeah this is probably super easy i just don't get it its like my 8th day learning
don't worry, that's what the server is for
can you detail what you'd like to have explained exactly?
or is it just you don't know much why there are multiple forms and how to pick the right one
So I'm having trouble with the etre stuff like this, I don't know how to apply it to sentences like above & just in general, and I was wondering if there was an easy way of explaining it? If I'm over complicating it/overthinking it plese let me know, but for example, the Laura one, if I look at this chart, none of that makes sense gramatically to put in the blanks. Laura she is or vous etes, I don't understand how to use these like it's asking me to when a lot of the sentence is left blank for me to fill in lol
do you kind of get where im coming from'?
"être" is the verb meaning "to be", indicating a state
In French, you can't use a verb as is in a sentence. You have to conjugate it.
what that means is that you have to use the right form, based on who is doing the action (+ how the action is occuring, but we'll ignore that for now)
"suis" "es" "est" etc
are all various forms of "être"
it's just that you have to pick the right one based on who it's about
if "je" (I) is doing the action, it will always be "suis"
if "tu" (you) is doing the action, it will always be "es"
the same concept also exists in English to a lesser extent
that why you can say "I am" and "you are" but not "I are" and "you am"
even though "am" and "are" mean the same thing
until now, is everything clear?
Yes so far
so now, if you were to replace Laura by one of the pronouns (I, you, she, he, we...), which one would it be?
je, tu, elle, il, nous...
elle?
right, so what form of être would you use with Laura?
est or es?
if the sentence uses "Laura", then "est", because that's "Laura" could be replaced by "elle"
now in your example, Laura is not part of the sentence
in question 3, tu subject is "tu" (you)
OHh okay, so es then?
yes!
it's always about matching the correct subject to the correct form (subject = who's doing the action)
Since the next one has vous, would it be etes because it's plural for both guys?
Thank you so much by the way
yes
in French, there are two "you":
tu when talking to a single person
vous when talking to multiple people (can also be used when talking to a single person but not the point rn)
and the verb form isn't the same whether you're using one or the other
based on that, would this one ALSO be etes since there's three people?
what can you replace "hugo, phillipe et amir" by?
"nous" (we), "vous" (you), "ils" (they)?
Ils?
yes! and "ils" doesn't use êtes
nouns and names are basically always il/elle (singular) or ils/elles (plural)
because you're talking about something or someone else
Did i spell it wrong? Oof
"ils" should not be part of the sentence!
what I meant was you could be saying "They are students" instead of "Hugo, Philippe and Amir are students"
that's why you're using "are" in that sentence and not "am students" or "is students"
the same thing happens in French
You could say "ils [verb] étudiants" instead of using the names, this way you can refer to your chart for the verb form
Ohhhh okay i see i see
