Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

is there a better way to say it?

copine / copain

This also means "friend" but it's usually obvious from context.

I also know "la petite amie" for girlfriend and "le petit ami" for boyfriend.

Using that for an adult sounds.... Strange to say the least.

#

I've heard ami(e) before, though only from one older man who's a regular at work

agile plank
#

sounds neutral imo to say "petit ami" or "petite ami"
maybe not in Qc?

like in a news article or something it wouldnt surprise me but talking to someone I'd find it weird in most contexts. There are some people who would use it but it tends to stand out

oh I thought you were saying you've heard the same thing as what I said from people from France

#

you're saying that you've heard people from France say that petit(e) ami(e) is childish?

#

okay, I guess

#

but I still hear it used here

rustic tiger
#

it's not as intense I guess but still childish side of things

agile plank
#

Flynn's comment that is more childish but more formal lmao

rustic tiger
#

yeah like I said it wouldnt surprise me in a news article or something

agile plank
#

I can see it having a slightly younger feel to it
like I'd be surprised if someone in their 40s talked about their "petit(e) ami(e)"

#

but childish seems a tad strong

We use “petit copain” and “petite copine,” which are both formal and informal. We can also say “partenaire,” but that's very formal. We also say "mec" (=boyfriend) and “meuf” (=girlfriend) very often, but that's informal.
