Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Looking at this video it seems exactly 1:1 with all the different ways you could use "yo" in English, with the same level of formality
It comes from Arabic
i seeee
tysm !!!!
de rien đ
also, if any native speakers see this, does wesh sound masculine ?
cause i feel like a lot of english slang does so im curious if it happens in french too
not necessarily, I hear it from men and women alike
but it is street talk
;wesh
What does "wsh" or "wesh" mean?
For starters, "wsh" is just "wesh" shortened. "wesh" is a word loaned from Arabic that made its way into the French language quite some time ago. The meaning is not the same anymore, so some Arabic speakers can be thrown off by how French people use it. In French, "wesh" is just used like "yo" in English. It can be a greeting, an exclamation, a filler word... It might take you some time to grasp how to correctly use it, but if you know how to use "yo" in English, it should be easier for you to use "wesh" or "wsh" in French. Oh, and of course, it is very much informal.
You might get made fun of or get a laugh from people if you use it. May get criticized depending on the person. Not everyone uses it, it's pretty divisive and very informal. I often hear it used more ironically than anything
It's common enough but imo I'd get a feel for it before throwing it around. It's overall harmless though so if you don't mind attracting a bit of attention it's not like you're going to insult anyone
You shouldnât use it, a lot of people hate this word (myself included). Itâs a speech tic used by young people that will be poorly received 80% of the time by adults, even in informal conversations.
it's slang and it's used. I use it myself. It's important that they know the context, but they can come to their own conclusion whether they want to include it in their speech
i seeee
aight tysm !
i do be a young person tho (im 15)
merci bcp !!
Yea you can probably use it with people your age
But adults don't use it
i see i see tysm !!
This is true for most young people slang, right?
Wesh, genre, du coup, mec, various verlan words, swearing, etc.? Some people hate it, some people are fluent in it, never use it with adults/older people, etc.?
Verlan is old
Mec is pretty neutral to my knowledge. It sounds very silly to me but that's bc we don't use it in quebec
Wesh is the ""worst"" of the ones you cited specifically
"du coup" gets a bad rap as well but it's much more common
Is kiffer pretty "bad" too? It seems like the arabic loanwords are more controversial
Genre is very neutral unless you're saying it literally every other word
Gotcha, thanks!
Yeah it's sometimes seen as "not french". I feel like people realize the origins less with kiffer tho so I don't think I've heard much if any criticism of it. It's just very younger generation and might be snobbed on for that
Could you elaborate on this?
It's very old slang so you'll hear a lot of it more from adults/older folk. Some specific ones have just become "regular speech" so age doesn't affect it, though the one space you'll hear unusual ones (aside from older folk) is rap, where they'll use obscure ones or make them up
You might occasionally see kids messing around with it cuz they find it slangy/cool but not too often imo
Kinda like you don't see ixnay much in english anymore
Ouah, intéressant
