Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Le and la are what are called articles, and in French, you generally need to use them with nouns, unlike english. On top of that, every noun has a gender in French, and the article tells you it, so it's important to learn them together
One of the eight parts of speech, an article is a word that modifies a noun in a particular way, by stating whether the noun is specific, unspecific, or partial. There are three types of French articles and they all agree in gender and number with the nouns they modify. - Lawless French
Many bilingual dictionaries will indeed say chat = cat, but they'll also include a little note specifying gender
cat chat (n.m.)
for example
Tous les mots en français ont un genre. Ainsi qu’il est nécessaire que tu mettes « le , la , les » devant le nom. Le ( masculin) la ( féminin) les ( pluriel)
gendre = son in law
you mean genre ;)
Et en plus, ( l’ ) qui a placé devant une voyelle ou un h meut. Par exemple : l’histoire, l’hélicoptère, l’aide, l’écriture
^ Faut garder aussi en tête que les noms écrits à « l' » retiennent leur genre. On aura alors : l’histoire/une histoire (féminin) et l'écrivain/un écrivain (masculin)
