Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Does it mean?
(A) This makes no sense.
(B) whatever it may be
Like how it’s used here: n'importe quoi que ce soit
"n'importe quoi que ce soit" doesn't exist
Ah. I deffo heard that wrong then. It was in conversation and I didn’t catch all the words.
"c'est n'importe quoi" => "that's bullshit/nonsense"
it could also mean "it's a mess" depending on context
It was in the context of « well, whatever happens, it happens, come what may »
it feels like it's merging two constructions in a clumsy way
n'importe quoi => anything (has other meanings but probably the closest here)
quoi que ce soit => whatever it is
Ok. It was in a voc with natives, so for sure I heard it wrong then.
I could see it be said, but mostly if they didn't think their sentence through and tried to fix things midway
Ah. Ok.
So what would be a way I could use « quoi que soit » in daily context?
"quoi que + [clause]" => whatever...
"quoi que soit" is lacking a subject, but
"quoi que ce soit" => whatever it may be
"quoi qu'il advienne" => whatever happens
"quoi que je fasse" => whatever I may do
etc
« Je bois et advienne que pourra » has same same idea, but different structure- I’m guessing.
"advienne que pourra" is a fixed structure/expression! That's also why there's no subject
smol tear 🤭
