Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
do you know the purpose of "le/la/les" in French?
@rotund kettle idk, what's the purpose?
they're definite articles
they're used to introduced nouns when you want to specify a specific instance of that noun, similar to "the" in English
j'ai vu un chat => I saw a cat (could be any cat, doesn't matter which)
j'ai vu le chat => I saw the cat (you're talking about a specific cat)
inversely , "un/une/des" are indefinite articles, for when the specific instance doesn't matter
Typically if no articles are needed, it's an expression/idiomatic usage that just needs to be memorized
It's easier to explain it on a case-by-case basis
Generally speaking, it's best to just add the article if you're unsure. It's more likely to have an article than to not have one
Especially when compared to English. For example, "I see cats!" would be "Je vois les chats !"
it would be "des chats" in that case
