the second action is true as long as the first one is, they're interlocked
present participle main use is to be part of gerund anyway, really (can also act as qualifier)
But what about this sentence

Why participle présent and not gérondif

Corrigez moi si j’ai tort mais je crois que les deux événements ne se sont pas passés simultanément. C’est-à-dire, un événement vient d’abord et l’autre suit après.
