Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Thank you @cold phoenix , also , does le portable mean both laptop and mobile ? And is that how everyone says 'laptop' and 'mobile'?
laptop is usually portable or ordinateur portable
mobile is téléphone or tel
u can say téléphone mobile but ive never heard it
téléphone portable is more common
got it , thank you !!
Honestly just say portable, nobody uses the two words
Tel
only old ppl say portable for tel
For me
yeah that
Nah I use it sometimes
LMAO if I'm old then you're the first fossil ever made
I'm surrounded by old people
That's why
yeah yeah
Also, funnily enough, the word for cellphone varies widely depending on the country:
🇫🇷 portable
🇧🇪 GSM
🇨🇭 natel
/ 🇨🇦 cell
*tel
Which one you're correcting?
Oh I see, hmm
I don’t think it’s only age that matters here, but general context mostly
Sure you'd say "mon tel" when chatting with friends, but other than that, I don’t see it getting much use
At the cinema, you won't be told "veuillez éteindre votre tél", rather "veuillez éteindre votre portable"
More "veuillez éteindre votre téléphone portable pour le bon déroulement de la séance" to me
I mean yeah, I can see "telephone portable" being used for this too, but my point was more that "tel" specifically, wouldn’t
Thank you everyone 🙂
Also , @timid pelican - you are so cute, when you said ' I'm surrounded by old people, that's why!'
I can relate and I found it hilarious and cute hahaha
