"j'évite de port__er__ des choses lourdes" would be a correct translation for "I avoid carrying heavy things"
but you need to use the infinitive "porter", and that's specifically for a sentence using "I"

you do need the "de", it's part of the construction
for nouns: éviter + [noun]
for verbs: éviter de + [infinitive]
