Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
avoir
those are the verbs using être, the other ones use avoir (except for pronominal verbs, they all use être)
But isn’t marcher a verb indicating movement, so it would use être, wouldn’t it?
verbs using être as auxiliary are more like affecting your being as a whole, while "marcher" is just an action you're doing with your feet
in any case, while there's a pattern, the actual rule is on a case by case basis.
Ah ok. So verbs in Dr & Mrs VanDerTramp are ones where the entire body is used.
but then again, it's specific to the verb which auxiliary is used
apparaître (to appear) for instance predominantly uses être
but disparaître (to disappear) predominantly uses avoir
not gonna say there's a logic to that
Ok. So would you suggest I remember the verbs that use être in Dr & Mrs VanDerTramp?
I should at least save the list in my notes
I should say that 'movement verbs use être' is more of a generalisation than a rule
Most être verbs (outside of pronominals) involve movement but not all movement verbs use être
