Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
faire vs jouer
I really need the context because these two aren't remotely talking about the same thing
@full hull
- Faire: to do/to make
- Jouer: to play
If you're referring to sports, "jouer" would only really refer to team sports, anything that would fall under a "game", generally speaking
"Faire" is for sports that are not games, faire du vélo etc. Could still be competitive, just not a "game"
If you're referring to instruments, jouer is overall better, but you can use "faire" to refer to habitually playing the instrument as a hobby/regular activity. Jouer is used for that as well but can also refer to the actual act of playing the instrument
In most other contexts, they're quite unrelated verbs
how do i know when to use JOUER à / JOUER de / FAIRE de?
like if i'm told to use « au, à la, à l’, aux » or « du, de la, de l’, des, de ».
I saw sth about this and i think when they're sports played in groups you can't use faire
Faire du vélo
Jouer au foot
for « jouer à » and « faire », the difference is more along the lines of game vs activity
je joue au foot means you're playing a match of football
je fais du foot means you're doing football as an activity
;jouer
Jouer un rôle
Jouer à un jeu
Jouer d'un instrument
