Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Or are they both different things? (I mean for time)
"X years ago" vs "it's been x years"
So neither is really used more than the other. They're different, but similar, constructions
even if "il y a" + duration (ago) is very common, "il y a ... que" specifically means the same as "ça fait ... que" and is quite rare in comparison, still used though
