Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"Quel(le) est" is "What is" when "which is" would make sense (even if not always the most idiomatic in English)
In this case, you're not asking someone which baguette is something, you're literally asking what a baguette is, which requires que/quoi, you're not picking from a list of options, you're defining it
So in the case of 'Quel est votre prénom ?' it's more like you're asking 'Which of these names are yours?'
As supposed to like, 'What is the definition of your name?'
It's like "which, out of all names that exist, is yours"
Which is equivalent to "what is your name"
"Qu'est-ce que ton nom" would sound more like "what is the definition of « your name »" (which just doesn't make sense, essentially)
Okey, merci beaucoup albatros 🫰
