Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Depends on the song. Can be very cringy, sometimes sounds better

kinda depends
If you're not comfortable with the language tho, it's hard to find something cringe as you're not aware enough of what's natural and comfortable to use in the language

on a personal note, I usually go towards English version by default as it's pretty much guaranteed to have good translations, whereas French can have shaky one depending on what the context is, plus there's usually more content in English.
For higher quality stuff tho, it's often a 50/50 whether I prefer the English or French version. Sometimes it depends on the translation/dubbing team, sometimes it's just one version that I resonate better with

Generally any translation will struggle to keep up with the main language unless they're very lucky AND have an excellent translation team, as they have to work with the meaning and try to make it hit the beats while usually having some kind of coherency (rhyming etc) and not sound ridiculous

yeah
If the original language is either French or English, I'll always pick that one
random example but Rayman games have better dialogs in French for instance

Double meanings, references, expressions can be incredibly hard to translate reliably

Undertale in French loses so much quirkiness

Usually something is lost

#

If not a whole lot

#

Sometimes you get lucky and get something even better, but it's generally the exception

Take the song "tell me it's you" from Mufasa. In french they say "il n'y a qu'un roi pour moi c'est toi." That makes a lot more sense....and somewhere in the song they say "open your eyes and here we go." just lazy writing to make it rhyme. In french they say "c'est l'univers contre lequel on ne peut rien" that's beautiful to me.

Or the song "Dévoile" from Kpop Demon hunters. They litteraly expose/unmask her on stage, it works better than "Take Down."

Oh! btw does anyone here have a disney song they can't stand in french, and believe it doesnt work?

Hey I don't know if this is relevant, but for foreign languages I do tend to romanticize music and literature in that language lol, and I've had a theory that because my brain has to work harder to understand its meaning it confuses that with it being deep in meaning

#

Like I might find that a Shakira song in Spanish is very poetic and deep but for Spanish speakers it's just more generic radio music

some could say its the craze of finally getting to understand something new

#

i have this craze as well

#

i think why theyre cringe to natives its cuz its literal and lacks deep meaning sometimes
