Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
qui and que have tons of usages, but for the one thats similar to dont
qui for subjects, que for objects, dont to replace de
doesn't depend on whether it's a person like in english
le livre que je lis = the book that i read
celui qui lit = the one who reads
le livre dont je t'ai parlé = je t'ai parlé de ce livre
"que" and "qui" are relative pronouns that allow you to give more information about a noun using a relative clause
by using "que", that noun is object in the relative clause. It's usually followed by a noun or pronoun that acts as subject.
ex: la souris que le chat mange (the mouse that the cat is eating)
in this example, "que" is giving more information about the mouse, it is being acted on by the sentence "le chat mange"
you can infer the information "le chat mange la souris"
by using "qui", that noun is subject in the relative clause. It's usually followed by a verb.
ex: le chat qui mange la souris (the cat that is eating the mouse)
in this example, "qui" is giving more information about the cat, it is doing the action "manger la souris"
you can infer the information "le chat mange la souris"
none of these sentences are complete, they are merely describing a noun.
just like "que", "dont" is used when the previous noun is replacing the object of the sentence, but "dont" is used specifically when the object is usually being introduced using "de" (whereas "que" replaces a direct object)
ex: la voiture dont j'ai besoin (the book I need)
in this example, "dont" is giving more information about the car, it is being acted on by the sentence "j'ai besoin"
you can infer the information "j'ai besoin de la voiture". The difference with "que" is the presence of the preposition "de"
Ty both
Btw so qui is used for like who does the action and que is like who undergoes the action. And dont is like replaced by de right?
Yup though for both que and dont describe things/people experiencing the action. The difference is that « que » works for direct objects whereas « de » works for indirect objects under the preposition « de »
