Direct objects pronouns are referring to object directly following the verb
ex: je vois Thomas (Thomas directly follows the verb)

Indirect object pronouns are referring to objects being introduced by a preposition between it and the verb
ex: je parle à Thomas (Thomas is introduced by the preposition à)

note: objects is the part of the sentence being acted on by the verb
