first off, your english is really good! I've been wow'd by what you've said :D

I took the approach of learning pronunciation and spelling rules first, and it's been extremely convenient. I don't know (idk) about hungarian, but french has some vowels that took me practice to differentiate, for both listening and speaking

I would definitely NOT recommend just looking at the letters and taking a guess. the spelling system and pronunciation is pretty specific at times. It's awesome once you know what's going on, but for words like grenouille, you kinda just have to know what sound "-ille" makes with "ou"; you should probably just look that up instead of firing off guesses and hoping people understand.

Then again, we're learning in completely different ways! I know IPA alphabet from my background, so I just read that. You would probably want to follow with audiobooks maybe? to hear the pronunciation and intuit the spelling rules? But there are many ways.

probably the best way is to start with some beginners material just to get a feel for the basic grammar, phrases, and pronunciation

but actually "assimilation" is still kinda the only game in town for fluency, so i think you're well positioned, although since you don't live there, you'll have to search out what to read and watch yourself

Well for starters I’ve set my phone to French so hopefully I can passively learn some words (although for stuff like Reddit and Twitter, I keep it English since those apps are horrible in other languages)

As for active studying, I’m curious what type of materials I could use to learn. I have a few manga in French (Kingdom, JJK, Oshi no Ko and Hajime no Ippo) but when it comes to incomprehensible input, I don’t know what the best videos and podcasts are to get my ears trained for French

Thank you for this response, I looked up vowels, nasal sounds and pronounciation of a few groups like “eau” “eu” “ille” etc. so when it comes to reading French, I think I’m okay but it’s the accent I think that throws French people off

Well for starters I’ve set my phone to French so hopefully I can passively learn some words
I'm newish to French too but I personally found this not useful and just frustrating. It might lead you into traps as well. I'd start with those structured beginner materials because so far they all build up to more complex stuff.

I like kids books, and games. games are nice because of the interactivity -- you actually have to understand what characters are asking of you. francais facile is easy, though I'm not sure how "real sounding" it really is. I like just trying to pick up little interjections from streamers as well.

I think whatever you normally do, try to do it in french sometimes! As if you knew how to speak it already. And just learn one thing at a time. Then, we you get a little more oriented to the language, you will have a better idea of what you're weak and strong with

Well there is Clair Obscur Expedition 33 which I’ve beaten and gotten a platinum trophy for so maybe I can play it in French next haha

oh just look up single scenes and stuff, or even single lines. you just have to pick up those little chunks of colloquial french. like bill said, if you get frustrated with that, go to beginner textbook guided structured practice kind of material

oh wait, the english dub has french words in that game, I forgot! Can you say lumière? /lymjɛʀ/ that's a good one
if you can pronounce it in a french way, there are groups of english words that come from french, so you kind of know them already by coincidence if you pronounce correctly and understand the structure of the individual words (possible, difference, acceptance, etc.)

J'écoute français parfait. C'est "anglais-ish" [que que que "english-like" wahhhh*] mais je comprendre exactement.
I'm interested what a native speaker thinks of that pronunciation! It sounds perfectly fine to me, but I'm also a beginner. I think that's perfect but maybe just be careful about sliding in and out of the accent in long sentences or something? Not sure, sounds good to me
*It doesn't sound quite the same as native speakers I've heard, but it's totally understandable, I think anyway. Or maybe hungarian hahahah idk, but that sounds totally understandable to me

It’s a trial and error process, I just wish to be corrected and a French person to be patient instead of pretending they don’t understand it just so they can leave the conversation lol

french version is not as good as the english version of CO E33 but it will help you a lot. (masteclass game btw)

Ha a kiejtés alapszabályait megtanulod (pár nap gyakorlás után menni fog), onnantól kezdve nem lesz probléma megértetni magad (kivéve a nazális magánhangzóknál, de a kontextus ott is segít). Fontos, hogy merj beszélni, még akkor is, ha kínosnak érződik. Én másfél éve tanulom a nyelvet, még mindig nem tudom konzisztensen kiejteni a "puha" r-t, de ritka, hogy a francia anyanyelvű lang-exchange partnereim ne értenének meg. A nagyobb gond az, hogy eddig elhanyagoltam a beszédet, szóval míg az értésem meg az írásbeli kifejezőkészségem már megvan B1, élőben sokat blokkolok. Szóval annyit tudok mondani, hogy minél előbb kezdj el beszélni, ne aggódj túl sokat az akcentusod miatt, hallgass sok podcast-ot amint oda jutsz (shadowing-ot is megpróbálhatod), addig meg a google translate meg a duolingo is elég gyakorolni a kiejtést (máshoz nem). Kezdőként én csak minimális grammart szőnék bele a tanulásomba (3-4 igeidő, prepozíciók, végződésekből a főnevek nemeinek kitalálása), ami nagyon fontos az a szókincs, mert még full rossz nyelvtannal is meg tudod magad értetni, ha tudod a szavakat, javítani meg ráérsz később. A szókincset persze kontextussal jó tanulni, érdemes fordító/chatgpt segítségével pár mondatot írni minden új szóval, aztán meg hangosan kiejteni őket, így kb minden területet fejlesztesz. Az immersion meg limitáltan ugyan, de lehetséges frankofón területen kívül is, nekem minden appom, játékom franciára van állítva, ami pedig még hasznosabb, hogy most már java részt azon a nyelven is tájékozódok, nézek híreket. Az angolt is ugyanígy tanultam meg, és C1-es nyelvvizsgám lett 2 év alatt, a franciával ez valszeg több idő lesz, mivel nem folyik a csapból is a nyelv, de megéri az életed minél több területébe integrálni a használatát. Köszi szépen ezt a hatalmas segítséget, a beszélgetéssel nem érzem magamat kínosnak mert angolul se voltam perfekt eleinte de mégis valahogy élnem kellett itt angliában, másrészt meg beszélgetni szeretnék a franciákkal (meg hasonló nemzetiségű emberekkel akik anyanyelvi szinten beszélik a nyelvet) illetve az egyik vágyam hogy mesteri kurzust esetleg párizs, lyon vagy montpellierben tegyem le 2-3 év múlva.
A kiejtéssel az a trükkös hogy ugye mi magyarok esetek 98%-ban mindent úgy ejtünk ki ahogy le van írva (például alkotmány bíróság sehogy se változik hangzásban) míg a franciában ha azt szeretném a google translateben mondani hogy “a jamais peindre dans nos coeurs” (ez egy szöveg egy játékból) sokszor a GT a peindre szót, prendre fordítja ami frusztráló tud lenni az én magyar agyamnak. Gondolom a franciáknak is hasonló rémálom koncepció lehet az hogy kb a magyar 99%-ban ugyanúgy ejted ahogy le van írva.

Illetve tudsz tartalmakat ajánlani youtubeon esetleg spotify podcastet amin gyakorolhatnék? Telefonomat már franciára változtattam illetve vannak manga könyveim franciául is.
