Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Pour is used in the first case but not in the second.

having an object to "aller" cuts the sentence up more and makes it harder/less common to have the verb without a preposition
I would assume that Mes amis sont venus me voir simply expresses a point whereas Mes amis sont venus [là] pour me voir expresses or places more emphasis on the intention or reason behind it.
Can you say j'y suis allé voir son chien ?
