Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
The -ci/-là difference only matters when you need a contrast: You're talking about this flower not that flower.
That aside, if you do want to use -ci/-là, the suffix is put at the end of the noun, not the determiner:
« Tu vois ces fleurs ? Je trouve qu'elles sont très belles, mais je préfère cette fleur**-ci** que cette fleur__-là__. »
Since the noun is already mentioned, you can also use the demonstrative pronouns:
« Tu vois ces fleurs ? Je trouve qu'elles sont très belles, mais je préfère celle-ci que celle-là. »
I don't think cette-ci is a thing, at least, I've never heard it @eternal harness
"cette" is an adjective that requires a noun next to it
What site/app is this?
looks like clozemaster
Oh, I got it. But this is only for nouns? In pronouns like celui-ci, ceux-ci, you don’t need always to make a comparison in order to make use of them, like in this example of yours
😭 clozemaster is teaching me wrongly
Sorta
So for -ci specifically, yes you do need to make a comparison
but for -là, you can use this wherever to sort of accentuate your noun
If you know how ceci/cela work, it's basically the same since ceci/cela is just ce-ci/ce-là but it just got fossilised
so I can go « Il me casse les couilles, celui-là ! (He's annoying the fuck out of me, that guy!) » or « Je veux pas parler de cette meuf-là (I don't wanna talk about that chick) » without doing a comparison, and that's fine
but if I go, « Celui-ci, ça me fait rire », people are more likely to expect you to add « Celui-là » because, again, we use « -ci » for contrast a lot more
i mean as long as it was the wrong option... it's probably trying to trip you up because cette-ci looks like celle-ci
And in this case, how would I do the same phrase, without needing to do a comparison afterwards?
I would use “ceci”?
