Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Yeah

#

Though, « Taïwan » and « bientôt »

#

Oh right, forgot about the ô

grizzled sedge
#

uhhhh it's not a very good sentence tbh

pastel elbow
#

Its weird though, how much different is the sentence from the allegedly correct answer, which is to replace "que je vais" with "aller"?

grizzled sedge
#

j'espère que is generally followed by the future
j'espère que j'irai à Taïwan

but since you're repeating the same subject, it's better to drop the second je
j'espère bientôt aller à Taïwan

vagrant lake
#

In this context, not much

#

People do opt for the infinitive

#

But it’s not a hard and fast rule

grizzled sedge
#

it's not grammatically wrong to repeat the subject

but it's perceived as much more elegant to use the infinitive

vagrant lake
#

It’s only a hard and fast rule if the verb triggers the subjective

grizzled sedge
#

hmmm, I gotta disagree there

#

doesn't matter if it's subjunctive or indicative
in both cases natives prefer to use an infinitve

vagrant lake
#

So « Je souhaite que je puisse aller à Taïwan bientôt » wouldn’t bother you?

grizzled sedge
#

and in neither case is it wrong to repeat the subject

#

I didn't say it doesn't bother me

#

it's just not wrong per se

#

it's definitely inelegant

#

but it can happen in speech particularly if people don't know what they're going to say next

vagrant lake
#

Hmm 🤔

grizzled sedge
#

I mean, if I can say "je veux que tu viennes" why shouldn't I be able to say "je veux que je vienne"
they're the exact same structure

#

uh, I also thought that it was wrong with subjunctive. I could see people repeating the subject in the indicative, but not in the subjunctive

grizzled sedge
#

hmmm
I wouldn't recommend repeating the subject in either case
it looks and sounds bad
but I don't see how anyone could make an argument for it being grammatically wrong

zinc veldt
#

no one speaking like that is a good enough argument to me

vagrant lake
#

I thought a verb requires a different subject for the subjunctive to appear hence the no-go on the subjunctive

#

As far as I am concerned though, I would still flag it if it comes up (the subjunctive appearing with the same subject)

oui ?

#

c'est pas le même ordre que ce que t'as dit

#

pour moi c'est assez bizarre comme tu l'as dit

#

un peu

grizzled sedge
#

ah !

euh... jsp
