Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
https://fr.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/cloué wiktionnaire is my first stop for etymology
it's there on the page, cnrtl just isn't the most legible (it helps if you click on the etymology tab though)
wiktionary is generally much more legible and interactable though
Thank you... can you explain what 1170-85 cloer « fixer avec des clous » (G. de Berneville, St Gilles, 885 ds T.-L.). Dér. de clou*; dés. -er. means?
The number 1170-85??
And this part 885 ds T.-L.?
Sometime between the years 1170-1185
Thank you <3... And 885 ds T.-L?
885 is the line number for the preceding text it cites
ds T.-L. = dans Tobler-Lommatzsch (an old french dictionary)
Is there a manual on how to read cnrtl.fr? Because I also want to ask about Dér. de clou*; dés. -er But don't want to overwhelm you with questions 😬
I see. Thank you :)
It's a lot easier to read when you already know french, since you can usually either guess the word entirely or take a solid guess on the meaning at least
I'd generally recommend going for wiktionary overall since it's a lot more accessible and you can usually click on a link to learn more, but it doesn't hurt to have multiple resources
Yeah having multiple resources is helpful :)
Désinence. 🙂
