Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
The "standard" (traditionally & outside of France) is -ai = é, -ais/-ait = è
In a decent portion of France, though, this difference has been lost, and you simply say them the same and use context
i'm from southern france and they're all é to me
wow il reste plus grand monde qui fait la distinction
Ah yes the map where my family is red in the bluest region lol
I googled the pronunciation and it says è to all 😦
ai = ais = ait = è
we have letters that are not pronounced (like the 'h')
Hi @left cargo , do you mean that the pic is correct for 'outside of france'?
That's what I thought.. but @dense edge says é to all , which is quite surprising.
Which region of France are you from, @bold viper ?
Suburbs of Paris (Ile de France)
Got it. I'm from India, and I was taught ais = ait = ai = è by my teacher long back 😛
What pic? The original screenshot you sent has ai = ais which is not the standard outside of france
well we said most people in france dont make the distinction but theres also the fact in the southern dialect è in open syllables (no consonant at the end of it) becomes é
Nor the traditional standard
Whether it goes è or é when merged I believe is regional
Or somewhere in between?

yeah thats what im trying to say
ahh right right yes.
