Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
the one i use most is probably "c'est quoi X" which is probably very casual. qu'est-ce que c'est X is good too, and it's more neutral.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "what does X verb" but if you mean like "what does john eat", I would use "john mange quoi" which again is very casual. "qu'est-ce que john mange" also works and is neutral, but you need the second que afaik.
worth noting that i would prefer translating "john mange quoi" to "what is John eating" over "what does john eat"
depending on the context
yeah
what does X + a verb
what does john like
what do they want for dinner
there's also the formal way of asking a question, inversion: john, que mange-t-il ?
also i missed the second que by mistake
its "qu'est-ce que ..." yeah
I use the casual forms the most often by far because I mostly talk in this discord, but someone who actually lives in a francophone country and works in French may have a different answer
in that case I might say X + a verb + quoi (the casual way)
