Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Lui is
- The indirect object pronoun in the third person:
I gave him/her my card.
Je lui ai donné ma carte.
- The third person singular masculine stressed pronoun:
I often talk of him.
Je parle souvent de lui.

The French word lui functions as two different types of pronouns and refers to both genders - but only sometimes. - Lawless French
The adverbial pronoun y can replace a place or the object of the preposition à. Y may be equivalent to "there" or a preposition plus "it."
In short: Y replaces something that was used with 'à':
Je vais à l'école.
Est-ce que je vais à l'école ? Oui, j'y vais.
Je pense à mon chien.
Mon chien ? J'y pense.
Very useful, thanks!
