Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
certain verbs like aller use être to form the passé composé all other verbs use avoir
these exceptions are all intransitive (meaning they don't take an object) and they're often although not always related to motion
aller, venir, partir for example but also mourir
"tu a" will always be incorrect though, you might see natives write it because it's pronounced the same
I usually see them primarily as "change of state" verbs, which can include verbs of movement (change in location/orientation ig) since it isn't really used for anything related to the means of movement
But ofc it's a bit complicated since language evolves in odd ways
Hi
ohhh just now I saw you wrote me
@sterile relic but look
both examples consider to be movement verbs
Tu as visite l'appartement du quatrieme etage
Tu es arrive' a paris hier
one time its "es" and one time its "as"
Cest from Doulingo
it's not all verbs of motion, just some
it's an exception not a rule
visiter is also transitive, it takes an object which means it cannot use être
Even among the verbs that use "être", the few that can have an object only use "avoir" when they have an object
@heady thicket
Sometimes you can use both
eg.
Je suis sorti -> I went out
J'ai sorti la poubelle. -> I took out the trash
I'd recommend reading a grammar book or using a site like lawless french or kwiziq, duolingo doesn't teach grammar well at all.
