Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
The negative particle « ne » ?
Before « y »
Il n’y avait plus de quiches
[ne y = n’y]
The order is basically
Subject + (ne) + me/te/le/la/nous/vous/les + lui/leur + y + en + Verb
You can get a max of two pronouns
Je ne le lui ai pas donné
I did not give it to him/her
there wasn't a "ne", though. the sentence in the post copy-pasted is this: "...arrivée au supermarché y'avait plus de quiches". but thanks! I've been struggling with negation for some time
Oh yes, the particle « ne » is often dropped in spoken French and written French meant to emulate speech
ahhh i see. thanks!
The subject « il » is what we call a dummy pronoun; it’s just there to conjugate the verb
In very specific circumstances it can be dropped and it is here
Il n’y avait plus –> Y avait plus
are there circumstances when a dummy il cannot be dropped informally? i guess with être or when an intransitive verb like pleuvoir follows it
