COD (direct object) is not le/la
it just means there is no preposition between the verb and the object
The article doesn't matter for that (the article is part of the object)
"vous racontez votre journée"
"je raconte ma journée"
"il raconte la journée"
with bolded verb and underlined object. As you can see, the pattern is the same. There is nothing between the verb and the object, it's a direct object (COD)
The article changes because you're talking about a different day every time

I understand a direct object means theres no preposition between the verb and the object but if “votre journée” is the direct object then why dont they use it as a pronoun in the rephrased sentence. And also why they use coi in which “votre amie” is the object (oci) but not “votre journée” also?

They probably didn't do it so that you're not confused because you can totally go, « je la lui raconte »

The full sentence would be « Oui, quand je la vois, je la lui raconte » and as a beginner, you might be confused that the same pronoun is used to refer to two different things:
je la vois = I see her
je la lui raconte = I'm telling it to her
