Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
<on y va / allons-y>
Uhhh they are synonyms and they mean basically the same thing and both mean either lets go or here we go
On y va, on a des devoirs à faire!
Allons-y ensemble, l’école et juste là bas
I saw one person online (I think Reddit but maybe quora, can't remember now) that on y va is more like a suggestion and allons-y is more like a command but when I tried looking for more people saying the same (or different) I found some differing views. Some posts say they're synonyms and some say they're not interchangeable and I want to try and make sure I don't use one when I shouldn't or where it sounds wrong. Would you say they're fully interchangeable?
Allons-y is almost formal
On y va is quite informal
Imo
@dawn lantern
Allons uses 1st person plural for the subject, which is completely lost in informal speech
It's in imperative and there's no imperative form for on (3rd person singular) so it has to be on y va but it's really the same sentence
So it's basically the same difference as between on and nous
Ah ok, thanks
Ohhh ur right, i hadn’t noticed the informal and formal speech 👌
