ils/elles is used as "them" in english
on is a little more complicated, it can mean a lot of things with context
on can mean "we" but in a more general sense, or in a casual conversation
So it can be like an informal version of nous
yes on can be an informal version of nous
but there are a lot of uses for on aside from the ones i mentioned already

Orally on has mostly replaced nous as a subject pronoun, and nous is pretty stuffy/formal
On has another use, its original one, similar to the English pronoun "one"
