Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

for your question, however, the answer is very complex, probably one of the most complex rules in French grammar to the point that natives don't always get it right

#

if you still have questions after reading that, feel free to ask them!

ok, so I think yes it agrees with Marie because she is female and also a direct object.. what is an indirect object? If we dont use que or les? :/

thanks! its starting to make more sense now but i see why it is not any easy topic. the next page of my textbook talks about changing the auxiliary verb when there is a direct object e.g est monte en haut vs a monte la valise :/ gonna take some practice

Marie is the subject in your sentence

#

« Tu es allée à l'école, Marie ? »
The comma before « Marie » is important there as it's used to mark that « Marie » is not a part of the sentence but rather like an off-shoot. It's to clarify the subject.
