Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Means that the person jumped once out of happiness
I find it a bit weird since it´s says ¨i only jumped once out of happiness¨ like it´s implying that he should´ve jumped more than one time if he was truely happy, or is there something else to the context i couldn´t get
Or maybe he would've kept jumping around if he was that much excited ?
What is the context with this sentence ?
wait i will search for it, it was from a book called ¨voayge au bout de la nuit¨
Since he says "moi, ..." I assume there are other characters that (re)acted differently
Oh, it's from Celine
Hmmm so he's describing the action that the regiment and the colonel are doing, and then he goes back to himself, and says he jumps out of enthusiasm
I found what comes next and apparently he's going to enlist in the army
Perhaps seeing the colonel and his regiment pass by inspired him to enlist ?
"un bond" = "a leap", so "un bond d'enthousiasme" is "a leap out of enthusiasm" I'd say
Maybe he let himself get carried by the feeling of "heroism" the soldiers parading in the streets gave to the people around him ?
And later on he regrets joining the war
That was the general feeling at the time, a lot of people enlisted just because they thought it was the right thing, that the war would be short and that they would be welcomed back home as heroes
Yeah, that could be it, i think it´s better for me to change the book since it isn´t that clear and the style is a bit old like you said so it´s not worth it trying to get accustomed to it
thank you so much
Even for me it's not that easy to read
There's a lot of old slang
It helps for the authenticity, he seems to adopt a more "oral style". From what I'm reading there is a lot of dialogue.
If you're looking for a book about ww1 with a more narrative style, maybe check "Les croix de bois" of Roland Dorgelès
yeah i get what you are saying
Also "A l'ouest rien de nouveau" (all quiet on the western front)
thanks i will definitely give it a look
And if you like comic strips, maybe check "C'était la guerre des tranchées" from Jacques Tardi
I'm usually not a big fan of his drawing style, but for some reason I feel like it clicks well with the theme of the Great War
Same for me, but this one looks interesting, i will give it a look
Again thank you so much for your help
