Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
i'd say french audio english subs so you get used to hearing it
and can understand at the same time i agree
studies show that if you watch something with subtitles in your native language, your listening skills will not improve
obviously your listening skills will not improve if you have the audio in english haha
thank you good to know
@mental wedge Is French Audio and French subtitles or is French Audio and English sub titles better
oops i didnt see this, great to know. i will be doing french audio and french subtitles. it will be very confusing at first but hopefully i can eventually get a few words. I understand the et and the tu's and the super tiny basic words (well a few of them)
Hello I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyrbflheAwM&ab_channel=DangerousVHS . Can I trust the French subtitles?
sadly no, they're auto-generated and have a lot of mistakes
Oof! Where should I watch classic kid shows with proper French sub titles then?
I was on Disney Plus Bluey but those folk that overcharge us already somehow don't have French subtitles for Bluey! 😡
a lot of french media doesn't come with subtitles. different cultural norms I guess.
try looking for CC subtitles (closed captioning). they match the audio exactly. Disney Plus has a lot of those
oh yeah the language your app is set to can affect what options show up. which is stupid
Wait so if no French subtitles how do I improve French by watching French audio with no sub titles
I said a lot of them, not all of them. here's a playlist of subtitled cartoons:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRN6QJdPPfc1dQtbTGti8FPiOzGw3bD5j&si=dj-XIc4yh3srmhsd
over time you'll improve your comprehension and you won't need subtitles as much
netflix has subtitles
I found Netflix subtitles and was just about to comment this! Thanks
hope they're good, have fun
Thank you I saved playlist
Tieguy and fquel, when I watch the French audio with french subtitles do I just soak it in like I would be if I was a kid living in Paris or do I have to pause every single frame, go to google translate copy and paste and then go back
don't use google translate
use a dictionary like wordreference.com
it's really like a personal thing, you'll figure out when to pause
but at first you're not going to understand anything, so if you pause every frame, you'll never watch anything lol
So do I just watch episode after episode in French fully immersing myself or is it mandatory/highly recommended that I pause every frame, go to the dictionary and paste every word
there's a concept called "tolerate the ambiguity". if you pause every second to search up a word you'll quickly get bored.
https://refold.la/roadmap/stage-0/b/tolerate-ambiguity/
though you can write down words you don't know and search up their meaning when you're done watching
Don’t look up every word. When you are uncomfortable with the ambiguity, you may be tempted to look up every unknown word in order to understand.
yeah that makes sense
that makes alot of sense, i was thinking it would be time consumign
unless you already know a romance language, you're probably not going to have the stamina to learn french exclusively through netflix, it's a supplement to your learning, an important supplement
nope, i only know english, i was genuinely shocked to discover genders in languages and conjugated verbs for the first time recentlky
actually watching netflix is my main learning right now of learning french. i dont really have a learning plan, just of just doing a couple lessons of busuu here and there
im watching this show called miraculas tale of ladybug, obviously i woudnt watch it in english but i have to watch something simple. next is the magic school bus
oh there's so many cool features in languages
cooler than gender
like inclusive/exclusive we
or the two turkish past tenses
I think languagereactor is an insanely underrated tool. You're able to watch shows with subtitles and right-click on a word to mark it as "learn later". You're then able to go through a list of the words you've marked, search up their definition, and mark them as "learnt"
