Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
This is because of inversion, one of the methods for asking a question. When a question is inverted, the subject is included inside of the negation
What about when I gotta use passé composé with a verb that has "me" before? Like se réveiller?
Do I say je m'ai réveillé?
Pronominal verbs all use être when conjugating compound tenses, so it would be "je me suis réveillé"
Note that the correct sentence also needs a hyphen
- N'es-tu pas parti ?
And don't forget that when using être to conjugate a verb, the past participle generally has to agree with the gender and number of the subject
Wym?
Elle s'est réveillée
My bad I always forget about the hyphen
Note the extra E
You can think of the second part of the negation like « pas, jamais, rien » in « ne … pas, ne … jamais, ne … rien » etc as adverbs – and really, they are adverbs – and adverbs can be interrupted by an inversion.
« Tu es vraiment parti -> Es-tu vraiment parti ? »
« Tu n'es jamais parti -> N'es-tu jamais parti ? »
Same principle.
