Hey there! If you're just starting with French, then the passé simple can be ignored for now. You'll only really encounter it in books or very formal conversations.

Imparfait + passé composé for day-to-day French, passé simple for literary works, and the rest for more academic situations.
Once you start learning about the subjunctive mood, which can be rather common when talking about emotions, doubts, and the like, the imparfait au subjonctif might be worth learning. It can definitely wait, though.
And for hypothetical situations, such as ('He would have been'), you'd want to look at the conditionnel passé.
