Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
A good way to distinguish qui and que would be to determine the relation of the verb to what you’re replacing:
- Qui replaces the person/ object who’s performing the action. To rephrase it, you will need to ask yourself who is doing the action.
Ex (in q.10): « Les devoirs qui font partie du cahier sont bons. ». The verb is faire partie de, who is doing that? Lui. So using qui is correct here. - Que replaces the person/ object that is being affected by the action. To rephrase it, you will need to ask what is the action affecting.
Ex (in q.5): « Les lunettes qu’elle a perdues… ». The verb is perdre, what did she lose? Les lunettes. So using que is correct here.
For dont, it is slightly different, you use it to replace person/ object who follows the structure « verbe + de », ex: avoir besoin de, …
Ex (q.17): « Le type de lumière dont le restaurant a besoin… ».
The full phrase would be « Le restaurant a besoin de ce type de lumière/ du type de lumière »
