Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Si tu es débutant je te recommande de regarder des vidéos sur YouTube. Tu trouveras de nombreuses vidéos avec des sous-titres en anglais et en français en même temps. Les films sont pas du tout accessibles pour les débutants.
Par exemple, EasyFrench
Mais, tu as écrit dans ton message que tu ne comprends pas quand les acteurs parlent en anglais ?
J'allais demander la même chose
Ah non, desole i mean francais! I accidently wrote that down, but also i wondered is it normal to not understand when a person is speaking french and would movies in my spare time maybe help me pick up a little on the french.
Au début c'est tout à fait normal oui !
Movies were extremely discouraging to me at first. I suggest easier content made for learners on YouTube instead.
Oh yeah totally normal
If you want to improve your listening skills, I suggest going for easier media like YouTube as Blunket said
French films with English subtitles will familiarise you with the general sounds and ‘vibes’ of the language, but it won’t help comprehension
i still have no idea what the french say most of the time 😃
Merci beacoup tout le monde!
how do i help gain comprehension? even with subs i have diffculty grasping
Gaining comprehension is having to consume A LOT of media
understandable media at that
Try to find videos aimed towards learners one level below you
if you're A2, for example, try looking for A1 material
train there before going on to A2
Ok thank you, so if i consume a1 material but dont understand but can grasp some words, is that a good starting point? Will i gradually learn to comprehend a1 and then move to a2?
precisely correct
exactly yeah
a few tips:
- get familiar with the phonetics of the language first. literally learning how to make the sounds with your mouth. i learned a lot from this video early on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPEZTUKOVZw
- you should know that pronunciation rules don't necessarily follow the same rules as text. for example, you might hear several words fit together in a way that sound nothing like the words being said in isolation. an obvious example is "je ne sais pas" being pronounced "ché-pa" or "un petit peu" as "um-ti-peu"
if you want some channel recommendations let me know cause i have dozens
Id love some if thats ok! thank u sm sm much
got auto-muted for sending a message with too many links and had to wait it out lol sorry
