Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Pronominal verbs always take être
Basically
Pronominal verbs have the same object as the subject
Je me lave
Tu te laves
Il se lave
Nous nous lavons
Vous vous lavons
Ils se lavent
The only other verbs (that you should be learning anyways) that take être follow the acronym DR MRS VANDERTRAMP
oh
so in this case?
You just have to check if it's one of those verbs
- Make sure it doesn't have an object for the DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs, as a few of them can take avoir if they have an object (only pronominal verbs can have both être and an object, DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs either have no object or, if the verb allows it, avoir + an object)
It's normal if that feels like a lot, if you can recognize DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs + pronominals you're already most of the way there ^^ the rest is mostly just so you're aware that those situations can exist
