Long story short, It is used for actions that have been done in the past and that continue on to the present, and is also used for habitual actions in the past.
I used to eat/I was eating - Je mangeais
Correction, imparfait by definition means that it doesn’t continue to the present. If it does, it’ll be the présent instead of the imparfait.
