Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Passé composé être vs. avoir
Passé composé être vs. avoir?
@limber oak here are the verbs that use ETRE but not AVOIR
also verbs that are REFLEXIVE (je me... tu te... an action done to one's self) also use ETRE
Je m'ai levé ❌
Je me suis levé ✅
ALSO ALSO verbs that use ETRE have to agree with the gender and quantity of the person/people
Il est arrivé - Masculine Singular
Elle est arrivée - Feminine Singular
Ils sont arrivés - Masculine plural
Elles sont arrivées - Feminine plural
Worth noting that some of them can be used with avoir as well, but that's if they have a direct object
Être verbs will never have an object as they are intransitive (which just means they don't take an object)
But not all intransitive verbs are être verbs, mainly just DRMRSVANDERTRAMP
Don't worry too much about this if you don't understand right now, the main thing is just remembering the group of verbs
people should learn to use the search bar. This doubt about if etre or avoir with the passe composé has been run into the ground here. If askers get in the habit of doing a forum search before asking more time will be devoted to the unexplored questions.
Searching for such specific questions isn't necessarily easy on discord, especially for people who may be new to discord and/or french. People can choose what time they devote to whatever questions they would like to answer. This also gives learners the opportunity to help each other for simpler questions which can help them retain the information. A repetitive question is still someone willing to ask for help, which is already great. So long as it's not "can someone help me" or "someone teach me all of french" there's rarely any issues with asking a question.
