Lots of phrases/situations require the subjonctif, so it's not uncommon in daily conversations. As for practicing it, I'd suggest just trying to use it as often as possible at first until you feel comfortable with it.

Easy ways to add the subjonctif are to

• Use phrases like 'pour que/bien que/avant que' that require it
• Negating verbs like 'trouver/penser/croire'
• Attaching a 'que' to opinion-verbs like 'aimer/vouloir/souhaiter'
