Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Conditional (Conditionnel) is usually used for things that would happen if some criterias are met.
The future tense is usually used for actions that will happen with certainty.
Here, the person asking the question is unsure if she will go to Paris this weekend.
Thank you. It was really annoying me since my gut was saying futur ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ
You may hear it in modern spoken french
I've heard things such as "Tu seras partante pour demain ?", but I'm unsure if it is correct or un abus de language
Yeah I think I've heard that too which is why I thought it might be right. The joys of language, eh? ๐ญ
To me, it sounds like using future gives a nuance of certainty
"Tu serais partante ?" --> you're actually unsure if she's down (50/50).
"Tu seras partante ?" --> you're let's say 75% sure
Maybe it is wrong grammaticaly, but I've heard it.
Yeah that makes sense I guess. It just feels really subjective, but it's probably safer to err on the side of certainty instead of being halfway sure (for choices, not the sentence itself).
Well, if there is only one answer to your question, then conditionnel is definetly better
Makes sense, thank you!
Because it exists to express a situation where something is uncertain
True true. I should probably just brush up on my tenses instead of being frustrated ๐ซฃ
If two answers feel right, but only one is accepted, then you need to ask yourself which one is the better one out of the two ๐
Yeah I do try that, but it's about 50/50 at the moment, hence the frustration ๐
Pro tip for conditional present:
Radical(root?) of future + ending of Imparfait
(But maybe you already know)
I do, it's more when to use it that I struggle with. With a single sentence, it's always tricker figuring out the conjugation since there's so little context.
True, a single sentence isn't helping
Yeah it's very annoying, but can't do much about it. Thank you for the help though. Really appreciate it!
