Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

YO

seems like a mnemonic device to identify regular -ir verbs (2nd group) from irregular -ir verbs (part of 3rd group) but it sounds to me more like a trick destined to natives that naturally know how to conjugate verbs

autumn estuary
#

should i just memorize the words they used

#

thats what they put

zinc sentinel
#

what's really said is as simple as
regular -ir verbs (2d group) follow regular conjugations (-issons)
irregular -ir verbs (3rd group) don't follow regular conjugations (not -issons)

#

but it's a weird thing to add in a course not destined to natives...

autumn estuary
#

but if they ask me which is 3d group and all end in ir how will i know

zinc sentinel
#

that's the purpose of the trick: check the "nous" row. If it ends in -issons, it's regular (2d group)

autumn estuary
#

re ik are third group

#

ir usually second

#

how can i find irregular

#

third

zinc sentinel
#

1st group is regular -er verbs
2d group is regular -ir verbs
3rd group is basically everything else

#

idk how useful the grouping really is

autumn estuary
#

how can i tell between third and second if both end in ir

zinc sentinel
#

check this article

autumn estuary
#

or present

#

the other one ik is pressent

zinc sentinel
#

it's conditional present, which is different from the present you might be used to (called indicative)

#

it's used for actions that may or may not take place, and would usually be translated using a model like "would"

autumn estuary
#

u recon i should just memorize the irregular ones in the book and questions onky?

zinc sentinel
#

I have => j'ai (indicative present, you're presenting information)
I would have => j'aurais (conditional present, there is a condition)

If you want to learn more about irregular -ir verbs, I recommend you give the article I linked a read

autumn estuary
#

there are 3 they gave us

#

courir vouloir and partir

#

those are the only 1s i found in the materiel

#

and my level in french is low not high lmao

zinc sentinel
#

all of them might be in the top 10 most used verbs in French

autumn estuary
#

is everything that ends with oir irregular

zinc sentinel
#

yeah, I think so (voir/savoir as well)

autumn estuary
#

so should i memorize that all word that end with oir are irregular 3d

#

btw voir is oir aswell

zinc sentinel
#

I mean the ones I gave you are just really useful anyway, even if you're a beginner might as well learn them
avoir => have
pouvoir => can/be able to
devoir => must/have to
vouloir => want
savoir => know
voir => see
venir => come

autumn estuary
zinc sentinel
#

you can do that

autumn estuary
#

they shouldnt get us something harder than that

#

as we barely know how to construct sentences

#

we started late
